Arviat water supply OK

Arviat (Jan 22/01) - The water supply has been given a clean bill of health.
Worries arose when routine water samples taken during the last week of December showed high levels of coliform in the water.
Hamlet SAO Darren Flynn said even the coliform count was within acceptable levels, the hamlet always chooses to proceed with caution when such occurrences arise.
"We were doing a good job with our water before and whatever happened -- whether it was mishandling of the samples by the people who took them or not I have no idea (what led to the high coliform count).
"Obviously the water is safe," said Flynn.
"The results of the new samples ... show the water is fine in Arviat."
He said the hamlet increased the level of chlorine in the water until the water could be checked again.
There was never any requirement on the hamlet to issue a boil water order.
