Inuvik (Jan 19/01) - Young people have the chance to get away from it all, at least for a weekend.
The Inuvik Justice Committee started its land program Sept. 15. Elders, and other adults, take people between the ages of 12-24 out for a weekend on the land.
Carmen Kasook, 12, took in a camp last fall, and said being on the land was a new experience.
"We went jigging, Ski-Dooing, and learning about the land and everything," said Kasook, who would like to go again.
More than 50 people have attended the camps so far, according to John Nash, co-ordinator for the Inuvik Justice Committee.
Nash said that males and females are set up at separate camps. They have snared rabbits, set up camp and hunted caribou.
Funding for the land program came from Inuvik Gas Ltd., Inuvialuit Regional Corp., and the Inuvik Community Corporation.
Honorariums are paid to those who host an outing at their camp, and food and gas expenses are paid by the justice committee.
"This program is a good chance to have the younger people connect with people who are willing to take them out," Nash said.
Sign up sheets are at Samuel Hearne Secondary school, and Hearne said any adults interested in helping out during an outing can contact the Inuvik Justice Committee.
Nash said the land program will probably run until the end of March.
