Yellowknife (Jan 17/01) - A three-tonne truck remains locked in ice near Mosher Island. The vehicle and driver dropped through a hole in the ice last weekend.

Archie Buckley walked away from the incident with dry socks. He'd been plowing a road between fish camps and his fish plant. No cargo was on board.

RCMP and city fire officals say a strong water current makes the area extremely dangerous. Yellow flagging tape around the site was placed as a reminder to drivers and foot traffic to stay away.

"We had one of our guys go through while surveying the area," said Mike Lowing, deputy fire chief.

"He had an ice suit on, he's fine but it goes to show you how weak the ice is."

The "keep off" ice warning does not apply to Buckley who expected to have his truck removed later this week.

"The quicker I can do it the better," Buckely said.

By Monday, apparatus was in place to remove the partially submerged truck.

Five years ago a vehicle went through the ice some 500 metres from Buckley's truck, Lowing said.
