Yellowknife (Dec 20/00) - Rising fuel costs continue to drive up the cost of living in Yellowknife, according to Statistics Canada numbers released by the GNWT Bureau of Statistics.

The Yellowknife all-items consumer price index for November was 2.1 per cent higher than a year earlier.

The jump between November 1999 and November 2000 can be largely attributed to a 32.5 per cent increase in fuel oil and other fuel. The largest contributor in offsetting this annual price increase was a 6.2 per cent decline in the recreational equipment and services (excluding vehicles).

By comparison, the annual price increase was 3.2 per cent for Canada, 4.1 per cent for Edmonton and 2.7 per cent for Whitehorse.

In Yellowknife, prices for consumer goods and services in November were .4 per cent higher compared to October. The rise in overall prices results from price increases for purchase and leasing of automotive vehicles, fresh fruit, automotive vehicle parts, maintenance and repairs, cigarettes and fresh vegetables.

Offsetting price declines were recorded for travel services, women's clothing, household textiles, fresh or frozen beef and recreational equipment and services (excluding vehicles).
