"Frere" Robert dies

Yellowknife (Dec 18/00) - A long time northerner Brother Robert Pelletier, Oblate of Mary Immaculate, known as "Frere" to many of his friends and former students, died Dec. 10 in St. Albert, Alta.

Brother Pelletier was born May 21, 1925 in St. Pierre de Shawinigan, Que. After his schooling and apprenticeship, he entered the novitiate of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, in Richelieu, Que.

Brother Pelletier came North in 1946. By trade, he was an engineer. He was known as a very energetic, active and good natured man who was also gifted with practical intelligence and common sense.

Brother Pelletier spent three years in Aklavik, two years in Fort McMurray, and 13 years in Fort Smith and served as an engineer on the Santana Tug.

He went to Grandin College where he did everything from maintenance to counselling students, who found that it was very easy to talk to him. He was director of the College and served until 1982 when he went to Fort Rae and then Yellowknife for two years.

He retired to Falher, Alta.and finally to St. Albert where he died of heart failure.
