Rankin Inlet (Nov 01/00) - The weather couldn't keep the Teletubbies away this time around.

Preschoolers and elementary school students in Rankin laughed, danced and sang as they were entertained by Teletubbies and Arthur Oct. 21.

The Leo Ussak elementary school sponsored the two-show performance which can only be described as a true community effort and resounding success.

They also visited Coral Harbour during their Kivalliq appearance.

The Teletubbies were originally scheduled to visit last spring, but were weathered out.

Principal Cheryl Forbes says many residents deserve credit for the event.

"The Siniktarvik Hotel provided them with lodging and the Northern Store provided lunch for one day," says Forbes.

"School staff deserve huge thanks for working so hard to make this possible.

"Our staff worked the whole day and the school gave up its 10 per cent of ticket sales to reduce the price of admission to $10, instead of the usual $12 they charge."

Forbes says she was especially pleased with the kids' reaction to the show.

"We had some kids, who we usually consider to be pretty shy and reserved, up dancing and singing along. If you could have seen the eyes of those little ones during the show, it was all worthwhile."

Special steps were taken to ensure every child in Rankin who wanted to attend the show could do so.

Even elders were admitted free of charge so they could see their grandchildren enjoy the event.

Forbes says people sometimes forget how important it is to parents for their kids to be happy.

Then a special event comes along and hard-working parents with large families pay up to $60 so their kids can see the show.

The local District Education Authority also sponsored a number of kids whose families may have had a difficult time getting them to the show.

"We then made out free passes for these kids because the DEA wanted to make sure there wasn't one child in Rankin Inlet who didn't have the opportunity to see the show."
