Sanikiluaq (Aug 14/00) - When the snow flies in Sanikiluaq this winter, there'll be a new way for people to get around that doesn't require cold trudges through ice.
Mary's Taxi will be starting to make the rounds in September.
It's been 10 years since a taxi service operated in the Belcher Islands community.
Mary's Taxi is owned by Mary and Kupapik Ningeocheak. The pair will share equally in the running of the business venture.
"(Mary) is going to be doing most of the driving," said Kupapik from his home. "I'm sort of the secretary and spokesperson."
Kupapik said the idea came in February when they saw people walking around in the cold.
"Not everyone has snowmobiles. Mary thought it would be a great idea to start a taxi service," said Kupapik.
They applied for a $15,000 loan from the Kakivak Association to cover insurance, the cost of a Ford Windstar mini-van and a good radio.
They're setting up a special phone line in their home to handle the dispatch end of things.
"Eventually we'll hire other people if things get busy," said Kupapik.
They'll be charging $3 per person per trip around town and $5 per person per trip to or from the airport.
They're currently waiting for the Class 4 driver's licence instructor to arrive in the community. He's expected in September.
Kupapik said he hoped the new business inspired other residents to venture out and start their own enterprises.
"We're very excited about this," he said. "We'll show the community there's new business in town. It is possible."
Mary's Taxi's grand opening is expected in September. They'll be inviting everyone to attend and promise to provide food.
"We're welcoming the (people) to take the cab and enjoy the ride," he said.
