Yellowknife (Jun 28/00) - The former Bartam Trailer Court could be the site of a major development next year.

The city has issued a call for development proposals for the property, located on School Draw Avenue near the Dettah ice road access.

City administrator Max Hall informed members of the Priorities, Policies and Budget Committee meeting on Monday that several local developers have expressed an interest in the city-owned property.

Possible developments discussed during Monday's committee meeting included medium density residential row housing, an apartment complex, a hotel or motel and commercial or retail offices.

Mayor Dave Lovell particulary liked the idea of a hotel or motel at the site.

Coun. Kevin O'Reilly, however, was concerned about what sort of development would occur at the Bartam Trailer Court site.

O'Reilly suggested the city should spend more time thinking about its plans for development.

He proposed options such as more affordable and efficient housing opportunities be considered when evaluating the proposals.

Coun. Cheryl Best said she believes there is an "awful lot of interest in the property," referring to it as "a prime piece of real estate."

Best said she has spoken with at least four developers who are interested in developing the site.

She said it will be interesting "to see what the request for proposals will bring about."

Hall said development proposals will be accepted until July 28. They will then be reviewed by administration and come before council on Aug. 28 for discussion.
