Inuvik (Mar 27/00) - The Northwest Territories' new commissioner has been hailed as an "energetic community activist" who exemplifies the best qualities of a Northern resident.

Indian Affairs and Northern Development Minister Robert Nault appointed Glenna Hansen, of Inuvik, to take over as NWT commissioner April 1.

Hansen, an Inuvialuit, will be the 14th commissioner of NWT, taking over for outgoing commissioner Dan Marion.

"Glenna Hansen is energetic, confident and creative," said Nault in a press release announcing the appointment last week.

"She brings to her new position experience in both the private and public sector as a manager and community activist."

Hansen declined to comment to News/North, but in a written statement said she was "honoured" to be chosen for this important role.

"I will do my best to fulfil the expectations that Northern people have for their commissioner. I am very fortunate to have such a good example to follow in Mr. Dan Marion who has served the North so well during the past five years."

She also sent thanks to those who have called to wish her well but declined further comment until after she is sworn-in March 31.

Also praising the appointment was Premier Stephen Kakfwi who said Hansen brings all the right qualities to the job.

"Glenna has always worked to make life better in her community," said the premier in a press release. "This is demonstrated in her commitment to health and education issues. She has also been active in the business community and balanced her own career with raising a family as a single parent.

"Glenna reflects the best qualities of a Northern person and will make a fine commissioner."

Born in Aklavik in 1956, Hansen joined David Storr and Sons Contracting Ltd. of Inuvik in 1990 as an executive assistant and has been the company's general manager since 1996.

She lives in Inuvik with children Bobbi, 19; Sherris, 18; Kristin, 13; and Tiffany, 11.

Hansen's involvement in community affairs has included chairing the local Education Advisory Board and Inuvik Community Corporation. She was vice-chair of the Inuvik Regional Education Board, co-chair of the Minister's Forum on Health and Social Services and was a director of the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation, Western Arctic Business Development Services and the Inuvialuit Investment Corporation.
