NNSL (July 05/99) - David Roebuck has been appointed executive director of the NWT Teachers Association.

Roebuck came to Yellowknife at the end of May to begin work as of June 1.

"I'm just hoping I can do the best job possible -- It won't be for lack of trying," said Roebuck.

As the executive director of the Teachers Association, Roebuck will focus on the management of the associations' arbitrations, negotiations, grievances and interests in the membership of the NWT Teachers Association.

Although Roebuck has never lived in Yellowknife before he is no stranger to the community.

He said he has been to the community several times.

"I fell in love with the place," said Roebuck.

He went on to add that he and his family have been looking to move to a small city for some time now.

Prior to beginning the job with the NWT Teachers Association Roebuck worked for the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America in Vancouver.

Although Roebuck said he has no experience working with teachers' unions, he did say the he has been job shadowing and working hard since his arrival in Yellowknife.

Roebuck is has been married for 17 years and has a five-year-old son.

Pat Thomas, the president of the NWT Teachers Association, said she is looking forward to working with Roebuck in the future.

"We look forward to a long working relationship with him -- he'll serve our association well," said Thomas.
