NNSL (Feb 10/99) - Dayna Meredith likes to draw frogs -- a lot.
Big ones, small ones, green ones -- you name it -- the Grade 8 student at Range Lake North school has drawn them all.
A recent creation, however, has gained her more recognition than usual.
Judges have chosen one of her drawing to serve as the official symbol of next months Yellowknife Regional Science Fair.
With science as the theme, Meredith incorporated a likeness of the famous scientist Albert Einstein into one of her frog creations. Frogstein was born and judges chose it as the symbol from entries received from each school -- Catholic and public -- in the city.
"I just did one rough copy," she says modestly. "Then I did a good one and handed it in. I thought it (Frogstein) we be pretty cool with science and stuff."
She was told of the decision last month and says her parents were extremely impressed when she came home from school to tell them.
"Cool, wow," she says when asked to describe their reaction.
Meredith, who wants to be an artist when she finishes school, says she had some help from her friend Shantana Doyle in coming up with the Frogstein idea.
"She said she was going to draw a frog and I looked around the classroom and saw a picture of Einstein and told her," Doyle says.
Range Lake North assistant principal Adam Bunin says his whole school if proud of Meredith's success.
"This was open to all students in Yellowknife," he says.
Take a bow Dayna.
The city-wide science fair will be held on March 1.
