NNSL (Aug 26/98) - When Brenda Dragon heard about the fire at that completely
destroyed the Kiilinik high school in Cambridge Bay, she knew she had to do
something.
"I just sort of felt for them," said Dragon, owner of Dragon Tales and
Books in Yellowknife.
"I thought this would be a good way for us to do something for them."
To help buy new books for the high school, Dragon has organized a
book-raiser, which is set to take place Friday at Sir John Franklin high
school.
"We sell high-quality educational books, mostly through book fairs
at schools," Dragon said.
"People order books through Dragon Tales and we deliver them.
"At first, my original idea was to do this book-raiser with
teachers only, but I decided to open it up to the public."
Dragon said that when she approached Yellowknife School District
No. 1 with her idea, the board was very receptive to her idea and well in
full support of the event.
She also said the book-raiser is a painless way for Yellowknifers
to help the people of Cambridge Bay in the reconstruction of the high
school. Forty percent of the total of all retail sales generated by the
book-raiser will go towards purchasing books for Kiilinik high school.
"It's a great way for schools to help," Dragon said. "The important
thing is that there will be books."
The book-raiser, organized by Dragon Tales and Books and
Yellowknife School District No. 1 is scheduled to take place Friday in Room
1 at Sir John Franklin high school from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
