NNSL (Jul 06/98) - Canada Post officials say Nunavut might get its very own commemorative postage stamp.

The corporation's Stamp Advisory Committee has shortlisted the idea of a special stamp marking the formation of Nunavut but the official announcement won't be made until October.

Staff, staff and more staff

The office of the interim commissioner is starting to gear up for April 1, 1999. With less than nine months to go before division becomes official, 12 new positions at the OIC have been filled, including new finance workers and media liaison officers. It is expected that the new staff will help deal with the increased workload.

Leader's meeting

The second meeting of the Nunavut leaders gets under way today in Rankin Inlet. Running until the middle of the week, the new government is expected to discuss a number of issues, including decentralization.

Nunavut Day

Nunavut Day festivities kick off this week across the new territory. In all 27 Nunavut communities, games and feasts have been planned by various organizations for the afternoon and evening of July 9.

Officials planning the event say it began after the land claims agreement was signed in July of 1993. It allows residents to set aside a day just to celebrate the formation of their territory. For information about Nunavut Day activities in your region, contact your local hamlet council or recreation council.
