FORT SIMPSON (Jun 26/98) - Don Antoine is a busy man. Normally an employment training co-ordinator in Fort Liard, he is now busy serving as co-ordinator of the 1998 Petitot River Gathering set for July 16-20.
With the theme "Working Together" as a guide, Antoine says more than 500 people are expected to attend the gathering which will bring together First Nations, industry and government for a wide range of face-to-face discussions.
An alcohol- and drug- free gathering, Antoine says the event will also serve as a family affair with plenty of things available for children to do while the adults and leaders talk.
"Something very important could come out of this regarding land issues," he says. "This is people wanting to work together."
"All those interested in the forest: the roll it plays in your life and work, and interest in furthering your relationships with First Nations, government and/or industry are encouraged to attend," an information package provided by Antoine states.
While participants are encouraged to bring food and camping supplies, a central kitchen, medical services, security and entertainment will all be there at the site.
The Petitot River is located about a half-hour drive south of Fort Liard.
People from Yukon, the Deh Cho, British Columbia and other areas are expected to attend, Antoine said.
"They're all from traditional land-use areas," he added.
The gatherings began in 1996 as a way to foster improved communications between the groups; to foster a better understanding of different value systems and to better co-operation overall.
In previous years, the event has been organized by the Fort Nelson Band.
