Digging up the city
Warm weather brings out construction crews by Anne-Marie Jennings
NNSL (May 01/98) - As the warmer weather begins to leave its mark on the city, the change in weather also brings around another phenomenon -- road construction and water and sewer upgrading. This year's list of projects planned under the paving program include new asphalt paving to roads in the Range Lake North area. Piro Court, Majestic Court, and portions of Magrum, Wyatt, Rivett and Stevens crescents all have appointments with a steamroller this summer. Kam Lake Road between Old Airport Road and Woolgar Avenue is also scheduled for road rehabilitation. In the same area, new traffic lights will be erected at the intersection of Franklin Avenue and Gitzel Road, and Forrest Drive between Clarke Court and Reservoir Drive is set to be repaved. Repavement of the roads will also be the big project in the area around School Draw and 44th Street. A portion of School Draw from 54th Avenue to beyond 44th Street will receive a new coat of asphalt, and 44th Street from 52nd Avenue to its east end will get the same treatment. The portion of Wiley Road which runs along the shore of Back Bay will undergo road design rehabilitation over the summer months. New asphalt paving will be applied to the access road to the Yellowknife Golf Club. In the downtown core, the intersection of 49th Avenue with 50th Street in front of RCMP headquarters will be realigned and the downtown lanes will receive a new layer of asphalt. In the area of water and sewer upgrading, four capital works projects are scheduled for 1998. Miscellaneous repairs are planned for Horton Crescent from Finlayson Drive, hydrant vault replacement on Franklin Avenue between 47th and 48th Streets, and water and sanitary sewer replacement on both 52nd and 53rd Streets. The last scheduled sewer upgrade for Yellowknife is water and sanitary sewer replacement and road stabilization of Forrest Drive between Lanky Court and 51A Avenue. |
