The big stink
City says can't act because manure still frozen by Richard Gleeson
NNSL (Apr 22/98) - Cow manure at Tuaro Dairy has begun to melt and flow into Sammy's Beach Lake, says a neighbor who also lives on the lake. Dan Prima told aldermen about the need to clean up the manure in a letter at the beginning of the month, but has so far been left to deal with the matter on his own. "It's started flooding into the lake down below," Prima reported on Monday. "I was able to temporarily dam some of it up." At an April 7 committee meeting, acting city administrator Max Hall assured aldermen the manure was something "the city would remove before it became a problem." Prima said his patience has run out. "I'm getting sick and tired of this," said Prima Monday. "The city said they were going to do something, but they haven't, so I've called it in as a spill." Hall said the city's director of public works, Gary Craig, has visited the site and is monitoring the situation, but the manure is presently too frozen to move. Prima reported the manure as a spill Monday morning. The environmental protection branch of the territorial department of resources, wildlife and economic development responds to spill reports. Director of the environmental protection branch, Emery Paquin, said Tuesday morning two inspectors would be conducting an initial investigation of the site Tuesday afternoon. |
