All eyes on Wrigley this weekend
Annual spring carnival gets under way by Arthur Milnes
NNSL (Mar 27/98) - Wrigley will be the place to be this weekend if you're looking for a fun event in order to usher in the warm weather in the proper way. The community's annual spring carnival kicks off Friday and the action isn't scheduled to stop until late Sunday night. "We're working hard right now at doing all the final preparations," carnival co-ordinator and Pehdzeh Ki First Nation sub-chief Sally Yendo-Nayally said earlier in the week. "Everyone is excited." On Friday, the carnival will kick off with the Carnival King and Queen Pageant, starting at 1 p.m. Because there hasn't been a king and queen contest in quite a number of years, Yendo-Nayally said the kids of the community are particularly excited by this year's contest. "They've been running around selling tickets," she said. "It's only been held once before." Friday will also see egg tosses, a pillow fight, snowshoe race and three-legged races to keep the kids hopping. A mini-casino will also be presented. In the evening, the Norman Danias Band from Meander, Alta., will be leading all the square dancing excitement at the community hall. Saturday has a lot of activities aimed at the older "kids" in Wrigley. While the day begins with a pancake breakfast at 9 a.m., the afternoon will be filled with log-sawing, log-splitting, tea- boiling and bannock-making contests. In the evening, youth jigging will get under way at 7 p.m. On Sunday, the day will begin with another pancake breakfast and then events such as a scavenger hunt, plank-walking, bottle- sucking and pudding-eating will occupy the afternoon. The carnival will close with an awards presentation and square dancing Sunday night. Yendo-Nayally said that most people in the community are looking forward to the king and queen contest and the awards ceremony. See you there. |
