Condition improving
Boy in sledding accident moved out of intensive care by Derek Neary
NNSL (Mar 27/98) - A four-year-old Yellowknife boy suffering from a serious head injury received while sledding this week was transferred out of pediatric intensive care Wednesday. The boy struck his head on a parked all-terrain vehicle Monday morning while sliding down the sandpits near the cemetery. He had a concussion and a large cut to his head and was medevaced to the University of Alberta Hospital. "His condition is steadily improving," said Mary Ellen Hoyles, acting director of patient care services at Stanton Regional Hospital, who had spoken to the boy's mother Tuesday. Hospital officials would not release the boy's name. Hoyles said she had been told if all went well, the boy would only have to spend a few more days in the Edmonton hospital. According to Alberta Safe Kids, head injuries account for 30 per cent of all visits to the emergency room for children aged 12 and under. |
