John Howard Society hosts corrections forum by Derek Neary
NNSL (Mar 27/98) - Conditional sentencing, aboriginal justice, incarceration and supervision of offenders in the community -- all will be get their share of the attention during a day-long community corrections and justice forum at the Explorer Hotel Monday. Corrections Canada and The John Howard Society are joining forces to sponsor the forum. It will feature several addresses, panel discussions and a question periods. "There should be a variety of presentations," said Faye MacDonald, executive director of The John Howard Society of the NWT. "It's taken a lot of planning and this is a first for us here." The forum will be split into two sessions, with the morning focusing on reintegration, while the afternoon will be devoted to alternative measures. "I think the downside is that it's a big topic to cover in one day," said MacDonald. For instance, she noted that the reintegration of criminals into the community encompasses perspectives from parole officers, the Yellowknife Correctional Centre, the Salvation Army, community justice officials and the courts. The keynote speaker will be Eddie Kolausok, an intergovernmental affairs specialist for aboriginal and territorial relations with the NWT and former chair of the Inuvik justice committee. Graham Stewart, executive director of the John Howard Society of Canada, will moderate the panel discussions. "It's a public forum so everyone is welcome to attend," MacDonald said. Yellowknife is one of seven sites to be selected for such a forum. Victoria, Edmonton, Winnipeg, St. John, Kitchener-Waterloo, Ont. and St. John's are the other host cities. |
