NNSL (Mar 04/98) - Five Grade 12 students at Sir John Franklin high school are gearing up for one of the most exciting trips in their lives.

They are off to Italy and Greece March 10 for 10 days of cultural immersion and sightseeing.

"Essentially it's a matter of providing kids an opportunity to see the world," said teacher Steve Lacey who's chaperoning the trip.

The five students -- John Colford, Liette Deyelle, Melissa Gutland, Amy O'Connor and Brandy Smithies -- have many places in mind they want to see on the trip, including the ancient resort of Pompeii, the museums of Florence and Michelangelo's art, particularly the statue of David.

The trip, which is costing each students approximately $3,000 (spending money not included) is set up through Education First, a student-exchange program that arranges trips usually between Europe and North America. EF pays the students up front.

To raise money for the European excursion, which they pay back to EF, students have done a fair share of fundraising this year.

They have done everything from bottle drives, and bake sales to hosting coat checks and running a rock-a-thon. Students received pledges and rocked in a chair for 24 hours.

The travellers had to choose from three destinations: Russia, England and Italy-Greece. A group of Sir John students went to England with EF two years ago. This year's group thought Italy and Greece would be more exciting.

Two other schools are joining the Sir John students on the trip, one group from Vancouver and another from Texas.

Students fly from Yellowknife to Edmonton, Toronto, Detroit, Amsterdam and finally Rome.

In total, they will spend 17 hours in the air.
