Spending on schools
Chief Julius gets top marks, other schools wait to be graded

NNSL (Feb 23/98) - Students at Chief Julius school in Fort McPherson are enjoying a brand-new, state-of-the-art high school.
Their old school was intentionally set fire and burned to the ground in
January 1996, sending children into portable classrooms, which themselves
were destroyed by fire a year later.
Charges were laid after investigations into both fires and
construction began immediately on a new facility.
"The school is designed with a very generous spirit," said Janie
Jones, who's been the school's principal for just six months now. "We
couldn't ask for a better school."
Among the new school's features are an extensive career and
technology suite, carpentry and welding shop, fashion design lab, kitchen
and weight room.
"The library is the most beautiful room in the school," said Jones,
adding that is it located on the second floor. "Just walking in the room
you get a sense of peace."
There is so much space for the school's 212 students that some
areas have been closed off including a bathroom and some storage space near
the library.
It's a rare pleasure. Students in many other NWT schools are being
squeezed into crowded classrooms as they wait for upgrades, renovations and
in some cases new facilities in 1998-99 fiscal year.
