Bank negotiating move

INUVIK (Feb 20/98) - Bank officials are not ready to confirm that the two will share space, but do say that negotiations with Canada Post are currently going on, and that an announcement on where the bank will move is expected this week. The Bank of Montreal announced late last year that the Inuvik branch would close its Mackenzie Road storefront and move to a slimmed-down operation, in with another business as a cost-saving move. Similar moves are being done with branches in the South that did not meet certain profit targets, and reports indicate that business will be the post office. "I can't say anything at this point, but we are in discussions with Canada Post," confirmed Gordon Oliver, the regional manager for this area. The bank has scaled back its operations to the point where it is now a "financial management centre," offering an instant-teller machine and a limited range of teller services. Customers have to use electronic or phone banking, much of it offered out of the bank's Yellowknife branch. |
