Darnley Bay pushes for park boundary change by Glenn Taylor
INUVIK (Jan 23/98) - Darnley Bay Resources wants the Paulatuk Community Corporation and Hunters and Trappers Committee to lobby for changes to the proposed Tuktut Nogait National Park.
The company quietly sent a letter to the groups last month, asking for their help in pushing for changes to the park to accommodate its plans for a mine in the region.
Early results from the company's airborne survey near Paulatuk last October revealed four promising exploration targets, one of which falls within the proposed park's southwestern boundaries. Two other lesser targets were identified within the proposed park as well.
The company wants to carve a 173,600-hectare rectangular section -- about seven per cent -- from the northwest corner of the proposed park.
Parks Canada's Western Arctic superintendent, Bill Fox, said the area in question includes the canyons of the Lower Hornaday River, and the La Ronciere Falls, "one of the major classic scenic points in the park," said Fox.
Parks Canada remains strongly opposed to any changes to the park boundaries. Fox said Darnley Bay has "violated the spirit of the (park) agreement" by including portions of the park in the survey. |
