NNSL (Nov 26/97) - A deaf and mute man created some confusion at the Rose and Thistle Restaurant Monday night.

The man travelled on a bus to Yellowknife, but on arrival could not communicate with anyone about how to find a place to stay.

"It's unfortunate we don't know why he came," said RCMP Staff Sgt. Dave Grundy.

RCMP were called to the downtown restaurant to help the man but could not understand his trouble.

An auxiliary officer with basic sign language skills talked with the man and wrote English on paper, but the man could not understand. He could only write in French.

An RCMP officer could speak minimal French but not enough to clear up the matter.

Fortunately, a customer in the restaurant who spoke Arabic and written French sorted out the situation.

In the end the man was found a place stay at the Salvation Army, said Grundy.
