NNSL (June 04/97) - Pastor Roger Woods leaped for his life Monday as a Sunshine Taxi sped across 49th Street, narrowly missing him before crashing into the Hodgson Building.

"I was walking past that red car when I heard this tremendous screeching of tires," said Woods at the crash scene, just after noon. "I literally had to leap for my life -- I'm not kidding."

"He just came full speed ... there was no rhyme or reason for it," said Woods.

Eyewitnesses among the lunch crowd of more than 50 onlookers said the cab clipped a black Camaro, hit a red sedan and then smashed head-on into the Hodgson Building, across the street from the Grandma Lee's entrance to the Centre Square Mall.

RCMP say a fourth vehicle was also involved in the collision.

Firemedics worked for about 20 minutes on veteran cab driver Salad Sheikdon, who was unconscious and wedged in his driver's seat.

Eventually he was pulled from the car and rushed to Stanton Regional Hospital by ambulance with what police described as head injuries. He was later medevaced to hospital in Edmonton for treatment.

RCMP and municipal enforcement constables sealed off the scene and began investigating the collision at about 12:30.

No other individuals appeared to suffer major injuries at the scene.

A cab company spokesman said no one was in Sheikdon's cab at the time of the collision.
