NNSL (May 23/97) - Though RCMP say highway breakdowns aren't too frequent in the summer, it still happens often enough to make travellers road-wary.

Rom Thom, co-ordinator of traffic safety programs at the Department of Motor Vehicles, offered some tips to summer road travellers.

"Before you start, check to make sure your vehicle is in good working order," said Thom.

Always carry emergency gear, summer or winter. This includes tools to change a flat tire, hand pump, spade, flares and reflective triangles.

Thom also said it is a good idea to have at least a gallon of water on hand for each person.

Also, cellular phones can come in handy to call for help, providing you are within range.

If RCMP highway patrol is available -- there is only one patrol vehicle between Yellowknife and Fort Providence -- it can help stranded motorists.

Sgt. Wylie Grimm said the highway patrol is always ready to lend a hand. "We will drive them to the closest place where they can get help," he said.
