NNSL (DEC 18/96) - The principal of Weledeh school has taken some heat for not organizing any fire drills for his students and staff this year.
Paul Byrne acknowledged his mistake by holding a fire drill and scheduling at least one more before the Christmas break.
The National Fire Code of Canada says that elementary schools must have six fire drills a year -- three a term.
Yellowknife Catholic school board and Yellowknifer received an anonymous letter last week from a parent voicing concern about the lack of fire drills.
Loretta Foley, superintendent of the school board, accepts responsibility for the mistake, but is also disappointed that the parent didn't approach the school before going public.
"Anonymous letters are below the belt," she said. "It's not ethical to do things that way.
Foley also said that fire evacuation procedures are posted in every classroom, and staff are aware of the procedure.
"He's done everything but have the fire drills," she said. "I assure you it won't happen again."
